Being a Teacher

When you are a teacher, God "tests" you everyday single day. And every single day you have to pass because the price of failing can destroy a student's future. Because of this, teaching can be one the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, and yet at the same time the most rewarding.

My fourth period gives me a hard time everyday. This this one class, I have 6 boys that are constantly either in DMC or suspended for their behavior. Every single staff member knows who these 6 boys are and just laughs when I tell them I have all of them in one class.

Then I also have several girls who do nothing but gossip and cause trouble. Then are well known too.

Over the year, I have tried everything to "control" this class period. The thing is that all these students are not disrespectful to me, but they are just rude to each other. And this pisses me off more than if they were talking back to me.

Well, this past Thursday, I had told them to get out a piece of paper and then I was just waiting for them to do what I had ask. They know however long I have to wait for them to do what I asked, they will be staying after the bell that amount. If they are going to waste my time, I am going to waste theirs. (This seems to be the only thing they actually care about.)

So, I was waiting and of course they were talking and getting up walking around the room. Only a few seconds went by when one of my toughest boys said "Man guys. Just get out a piece of paper like she asked you to. She is the best teacher here and I am tired of everyone talking."

I know it wasn't much, but because it came from him...it meant a whole lot.

It just goes to show you that some students might not seems like you are "getting" anywhere with them, but deep down they are listening to you. And when they finally show this to you, it is the best gift you could receive.

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." ~Henry Brooks Adams

Reminds you why you teach... :) Know you are making a difference.

In my job I do not get many of those comments anymore, and it saddens me greatly. The classroom can be so hard, but it IS the most rewarding place in the world.
